The accent in Hawaii... - Mark Atwood

The accent in Hawaii...
... is ugly. Worse even than the Utah accent.

The vowels are very flat, they are pushed foward, and fast. It sounds like people are barking out the words.

It's sad. If there is any place where an American English accent should be pretty and melodic, it should be here.

Current Location: Honolulu, HI

have you ever been to Savannah, Georgia? beautiful accents there (I think they're a tad syrupy, but I flunked Southern charm).

Is it an Oahu thing? I started living in the islands on the Big Island, and I tend to have a Big Island accent when I talk about Hawaii; I always found it melodic and singsong (I pick up accents when I live in a place, or hang out with people who have a regional accent; it's almost unconscious). Oahu has been infected with the Big City talkfast problem. (Almost *everyone* on the Big Island complained that I talked too fast. And they were right. I managed to slow down for a while, after about a year there).

Pidgin, on the other hand, requires a while to enjoy. After a while you start to 'hear' it better, I found.
