All blog-like sites should just have a button and a simple form "enable Google Analytics".

This especially includes LiveJournal and Flickr.

That Blogger doesn't do it is especially annoying, given that they are owned by Google.

Frankly, every time I see that in the bottom of my browser, I wonder if I'm either being spied on or advertised at, and just how much of my bandwidth is being wasted in the process.

You are being counted.

The bandwidth used is minimal, a banner ad is far heavier.

The bigger sites that control their whole HTTP stack can do this counting completely server side. Google Analytics is for small fry folks who are using hosted service and blog-like things, who also want to know their readership numbers.

Arguable, the need to know their readership numbers more than the big boys, for the same reason that Bill Gates doesnt care about his pocket change, and a single mother does.
