Review: The Red Balloon Company
Late this summer, the natural foods market around the corner, "Rainbow Market", finally died. The space was empty for a while, then got papered over, with notice to look for a cool retail store open "soon". I was really hoping for a cool hardware, houseware, and hobby store. Or there was a rumor that Twice Sold Tales was moving into the space.

Instead, it's a franchise store of "The Red Balloon Company". I wandered around in it this past weekend.

My summery?

Archie McPhee, as done by The Gap.

I was sooo disappointed to see Rainbow go. It was one of the things that made it desirable to live on 15th, when I did, way back when I first moved to Seattle.

Red Balloon? What a dumb choice for that space. I bet it dies within a year.

If they have to tell you it's going to be a "cool" store, it isn't.

Gonna disagree -
I don't think the Gap is a good comparison because it's only the second store. The other one is in downtown Seattle. Hardly giant bland franchiseness. It's a fun little store to have downtown.

I don't know whether it'll make it on Cap Hill, though, which has plenty of quirky little stores that carry Archie McPhee and funny cards etc.
