Key in ceiling

About a week ago, my coworkers and I noticed a lock and key hanging from the ceiling. For all I know, it's been hanging there for the past five years, without my noticing it.

I have no idea what it's for...

A lock and key? Is it set in a door of some kind?

Every hear the Steven Wright joke about the light switch he thought didn't do anything?

Twist the key back and forth. Maybe you will get a letter from a lady in Germany.

That's clearly one of two activation panels for a self-destruct system #15-116. There should be a second panel nearby but out of reach of the first.

Cool. I knew that oil drilling platforms came equipped with computerized self-destruct systems (I learned this from an episode of Baywatch Nights*), but I didn't realize office buildings did too!

*In which Our Hero, Mitch Buchanan, fought a thinly-disguised The Blob on an abandoned oil drilling platform. He defeated it in the end by setting the platform's self-destruct system--a very involved process that resembled Ripley blowing up the Nostromo in Alien, complete with audible computer-voice countdown--before escaping in a speedboat. It was the most surreal--and funniest--thing I think I have ever seen on television. A friend and I fell out of our chairs laughing and couldn't breathe for a few minutes. (And then we watched the show religiously for the few episodes it lasted, hoping that lightning would strike twice. Alas, it never did. On the other hand, Angie Harmon. Mmmmm.)
