Gasoline in Oregon
Three times now, I have said "fill it up" when I pull into an Oregon gas station. (Oregon is one of two US states that forbid selfserve gasoline, and mandate having a station attendent do it.)

All three times, after I pull away, my fill gauge has read "7/8" instead of "F".

Am I just unlucky, or does Oregon have a policy where they really won't fill it all the way up?

I've not had that problem. *shrug*

I've purchased two tanks of gas in Oregon in two different cars, and both times the gauge read F afterwards.

Such a policy would require a priori knowledge of your tank's capacity and current fuel level on the part of the attendant, which seems unlikely.

When you fill the tank yourself, are you able to insert the nozzle all the way and then trust the automated shutoff to give you a full tank? In my old car, the tank's fill hose was poorly designed such that fuel would splash back onto the nozzle and trigger the shutoff prematurely. That one never made it out to Oregon, though. (This was a tiny, 14-year-old POS Ford Festiva that we christened "the rollerskate".)

What I was suspecting was that Oregon uses the "utter freaking paranoid" style of noozle, and has the backpressure sensor on a hair trigger, and won't keep trying to fill after it's tripped once.

When I fill-er-up myself at stations with the paranoid nozzles, it trips at about 7/8. I have to let it sit for a moment, and the keep filling more slowly, to get the last 1/8th of a tank in.

In 13 months of living in Oregon, I found that most lot attendants will top off the tank a bunch of times. Maybe you just found the ones who follow the directions on the thing.
