Somebody's Good(?) News
I'm sitting here at a café on California Ave in West Seattle (I'm over here to feed jezel's cats). There were a couple of women sitting outside, and one got a call on her cellphone, apparently from a clinic. Because she looked shocked and amazed, and then immediately stubbed out her cig, and then came inside to ask if she could return her unsipped latté. It seems that the news that she just got was, was that she was pregnant.

She went back outside, and then proceeded to make a fast half dozen phonecalls, then spent a couple of minutes talking intently with her friend, and then they gathered up their stuff and walked quickly away.

I wonder if this was good news for her or not. It was hard to tell.

I can't believe she announced her pregnancy to a restaurant full of strangers and called all those people the moment she found out.

Not *everybody* keeps something like this a secret from everybody except their husband and their doctor for six months, you know...

It's a snap judgement based on her age, appearance, attitude, and "look", and the fact that she was spending an idle afternoon in a cafe with a girlfriend, but I suspect that this will be her first. She doesn't look like a mother, and she didn't look like she has the wealth to hand the task over to a servent, nor the poverty of look that implies that she will hand it right over to DFS.

Did you hear her say that she is pregnant? Because maybe the news was something else? Like cancer... ?

She definately said "pregnant". That's what she said when she returned her latté and she also definately said it a couple of times on the phone and to her friend.

Whether it was 'good' news or not, if stubbbing out her cig was her immediate response, then she's going to be happy about it as soon as she gets used to the idea. (Or when the nausea subsides - whatever. ;) )

At least, that was my experience. Even though it was entirely unexpected, I knew in the first minute what I would/wanted to do. Then I agonized for 10 weeks before rediscovering my decision. Of course I was also much younger and less comfortable doing what *I* wanted in those days.
