Something interesting and true.

Similarly today, only poor people wear gold chains since only poor people need to prove they are not so poor that they are unable to afford a pound or two of gold. link

So what are some of the things that are markers of wealth today, that in the future will be tacking markers of the poor? (In the thread that this quote was cliped from, some of the past markers of wealth that are today markers of poorness are "fat" and "baggy clothes".)

There's a Sudanese kid who works at my husband's Lowe's, and he noted that it was very sad that so many of the contractors who came in for supplies were obviously hard-working men but they still could not afford clothes that fit.

When they explained that the style was to wear clothes several sizes too large, he laughed his head off.

Yes, but the wealthy can also afford the medical attention, health club, and food that keeps one from getting fat. The fattiest foods with the simple quality of being overwhelmingly "taste-full" (think MacDonalds) are inevitably the cheapest.

Part of the problem is that "the poor" simply don't know how to live. Too many poor urban kids grow up having never seen a cooking maneuver more complicated than ramen and Kraft Mac&Cheese. The middle class and up have time to contemplate a cookbook.

I wonder if the sudden spate of cooking shows is helping the situation, or just making food porn worse.

In the future, houses.

Yep. Read it in a story, once. The rich people all move off to gallavant in space and the po' folk move into the vacant mansions.

With Global warming, I can see the poor being pushed to the now "resort areas" and the wealthy moving to watch are now the cooler regions. Same goes for costal areas. As the sea levels rise, beach front property may become less desireable.
