The laptops
After printing out and reaching much of the "IBM Mobile Systems ThinkPad Computer Hardware Maintenance Manual" for the T23, I realized that this was going to be a lot more than I was able to do. (FerEx, many of the screws are single use, one can't just take it apart and put it back together again, a new screw and fastener kit is needed each time).

So I researched local IBM "partners", and yesterday morning took them to UniSoft in Redmond. A few hours later, I got the call. "The waranty expired on Dec 18". Damn. How much for non-waranty service? "A new system board is $600, and that may not fix it". Which is what I paid for each them.

So I told them to try the "take it all apart, reseat everything, and put it back together". It can't hurt, and I'll just be out the cost of the tech's time.

Crud crud crud.

Maybe it's time to bite the bullet, and actually buy a newish one from IBM, instead of these skanky eBay refurbs.

I'm sorry you are ending the year on such a dour note. You have had bad luck with your computers lately. May your luck change in 2005.

IBM has a refurbished product line. I picked up a t23 for a little more then 600usd a couple months back. No problems, comparable battery life, and debian was up and running in a couple hours, watching DVD's in another 30m.

And that's what I just did, ordered a IBM refurb T23. A hundred and so bucks more than what it would be on eBay, but for getting something I can go back to IBM for, that's worth it.

Now I need to start researching new cases, I am suspecious that my current case lacks the padding that my previous one did, thus is why I've just broken two computers exactly the same way.

That, I can't help you with. I wear this pretty much everywhere I go. My T23 fits perfectly into it, and it's got pouches for all my portable accessories, plus room for books, cell phone, etc.
