Am I crazy?
According to MapQuest, driving from home to my parent's home near Salt Lake City is only twelve hours.

Would I be insane to try it in December?

Update: I'm going to do it.

Probably, but then I know lots of people who do it. Make sure you have your chains. You have 4wd don't you?

Driving

Well, most likely. However, your dad went to Arizona last year after Christmas. That was north, not south. We drove from Moscow Idaho to SLC before Brent was born. We left on the night of the 25th and drove all night so children could sleep. We then spent New Years in SL. We wanted to spend Christmas day at our home there. It hadn't snowed in Idaho that year until Christmas and I remember positively it was snowing on the way home. We had good tires. I can't believe it is only 12 hours to Seattle. It seemed like it was 12 hours to Moscow. The advantage is no airport security or lines. The disadvantage is miles, weather, roads, etc

Wrong direction

I meant last year your dad went south not north.

12 hours in good weather, I imagine. But with the right car and chains its doable.

If you have an emergency kit with you (water, blanket, food, flashlight, emergency heat packs), chains, 4wd, common sense, and stamina, I see no reason not to try it.

Hard to believe considering it took us 13 hours to get to Yellowstone, but Heck yeah! Go for it!

20 minutes at Jiffy Lube, get lots of good music at the ready, & you're good to go.

Why not fly and then rent a car? :-D

Because I'm really starting to hate flying. Between the airports, having to be at the airport 2 hours before departure, constraining my luggage, and having to get frisked by the TSA...

Plus then having to rent a car in SLC.

Get some books on tape. You'll be set. :-)

I would check...

...the price of gas vs the cost of a plane ticket!

I drove to San Fran which was a 12 hour jaunt...but the gas made it more spendy than just flying there and renting a car.

Re: I would check...

We drove to California last year and we figured out that it would have been cheaper to fly & then rent a car. Plus we'd have had more time there.

Sometimes it's just a wash and a personal preference thing.
