(no subject)

When I was in Utah last week, my dad asked me for a recommendation for a programming language/environment. He learned FORTRAN back when it was called "FORTRAN IV", and has had written over the years numerous number crunchers as part of his work, originally in FORTRAN, and then later in BASIC.

He running WinXP on his desktop and laptop, and wants again to do basic number crunching, in a simple straightforward imperitive style. All he needs are loops, if statements, and basic real numbers.

I suggested the Python for Windows package. The price is right, the IDE is straightforward, and he can program the way he wants. (Tho he will have to learn about while loops, instead of combining if/goto.)
