I'm willing to believe that a number of respondents to the survey were not thinking of Shari'a as a system of oppression, and probably were not thinking at all of the stricter aspects thereof. I'm willing to believe that many of the residents in the western democracies don't realize how little protection the legal and social systems give them, as compared to some other systems. Spin goes both ways. Everyone has an agenda, not only the mainstream press.

For the record: I oppose Shari'a. I just have this personality defect: when a strong opinion is voiced in my vicinity I am compelled to voice a differing opinion.

Let's see. They surveyed only "mosque participants"--ie: at the very least they chose religious people to survey, and possibly they did the surveying in a way that didn't lead people to expect full anonymity--and they asked about "Moslem countries." I'm suprised the percentage was so low. The survey says nothing whatsoever about what laws multicultural or secular countries should have or about the opinions of the entire Moslem community in Detroit.

Sorry, I'm rather glad the press reported it that way--this sounds to me like a scare-mongering survey.

I'm disturbed by this.

I don't know what to think about it either, possibly why its so disturbing. On the one hand I want to be generous and believe that those people didn't truly understand what they were saying. (living in the US too long to really understand)

On the other hand I think they should be immediately shipped OUT of my country. The US is a melting pot, for everyone, equality and all that rot. (hey a girl can dream...) If they truly believe that fully in oppression they should get the hell OUT. [Yes I think the same way about other people like this, say for example the KKK kiddies. But I'd hate to send them to some other unsuspecting country so we'd have to figure out what else to do with them.]

As a side note, I must be getting more mellow in my old age. There was a time I would have suggested a much more severe action.
