OkTrends, and profile photos
According to OkTrends: The 4 Big Myths of Profile Pictures my profile picture is all wrong for dating sites.

To be "more effective", I should use one of me not smiling and not making eye contact with the viewer.

With bonus points of having an animal as a prop.

Making eye contact, smiling, and wearing nice clothes are not useful. And outdoors and travel photos are anti-useful.

So much for so much advice.

Depends on who you're trying to reach, I guess. *shrug* I am more likely to respond to people who smile and look at the camera. Also, I generally find pets to be a turn off in profile pics and like to have outdoors photos for people who talk about enjoying being outside. Of course, I also know that I'm a bit different in my tastes.

Sheesh, what I also noticed was the metrics, the units used on the graphs. For women it was "New contacts" and it approached 10. For me it was "Women met per attempt", and even the best was well below 1.

So clearly the BEST way to get hits on a dating website is to be female.

First of all, you have great photos that make you look approachable but intriguing, as well as cute and intelligent. Re eye contact, yeah, that's why the Mona Lisa is such a forgettable picture.

As for the rest, if someone's posing with a dog (and that's much more likely than any other animal), I know immediately I'm not interested in him/her. I will say I'm not big on the outdoors/travel shots, simply because the person's face tends to be tiny, and I want to see her/him, not the beautiful sunset or whatever. Those should go under the alternate photos section, with a close-up for the main shot.

(This is coming from someone who still uses a '05 shot you took because most photos don't capture me. Also, I'm not even looking at OKC these days, so this is just what I remember.)
